Swaddling causes overheating.
Swaddling alone does not cause a baby to overheat. However, over dressing, excessive heat, or covering a baby’s head while sleeping
can cause significant temperature elevation. Wrapping your baby in breathable, natural fibers help to ensure a stable body temperature.
Signs of overheating include: sweating, damp hair, heat rash, rapid breathing, and restlessness.
Swaddling is uncomfortable.
Although some babies initially resist swaddling, all newborns miss the snug feeling of the womb. With practice and persistence, your baby
may even calm herself just as you begin the wrapping process.
Tightly wrapping is unsafe.
Just the opposite is true. Pediatricians advise against letting your baby sleep in loose blankets and believe that snug, secure wrapping
is a safe way to protect your baby while sleeping.
My baby is too old to be swaddled.
Most babies will enjoy swaddling until three to four months of age. Older babies may benefit from leaving one arm out to allow for
finger sucking. You can start swaddling at any age, although older babies may initially be more resistant.
Babies should only be swaddled while sleeping.
False. Babies benefit from swaddling anytime, particularly in the early months. The younger the baby, the more often they
should be swaddled.
